Much as it did in the fashion world, the 1970s yielded some of the 20th century’s funkiest watch designs, with creatively shaped cases, outré dials, and unusual features. Many of Citizen’s timepieces from this era — which feature tonneau and “C”-shaped cases, a myriad of bracelet types, and colorful faces — still appear fresh and adventurous today.

This Date Star Custom ladies’ watch is an excellent example of vintage ‘70s styling: Housed in a 27mm stainless steel “C”-shaped case with a wide, brushed bezel; an unsigned crown; and an acrylic crystal, it features a matte-black dial with an outer open minute track in white; applied indices with round lume plots; a luminous ‘sword’ handset; and a magnified date window at 3 o’clock.

Flip the watch over, and a screw-down caseback reveals its reference and serial numbers, while a funky, brushed stainless steel flat-link bracelet with an unsigned locking clasp keeps it securely affixed to the wrist. Powered by a hand-wound Citizen movement with 21-jewels and shipping with its original price tag and outer box, this Date Star Custom is an excellent, analog daily companion in a digital world.
