With a history dating back over a century, Citizen has a large catalog of compelling vintage models worthy of your attention. This year, we’re teaming up with the vintage and pre-owned watch specialists at Analog:Shift in New York City to curate a capsule collection of pieces for the discerning collector.

Few complications offer the sheer utility of the chronograph. From the Greek khrónos (“time) and gráphō (“to write”), a chronograph is a watch that has the ability to record time, generally via the addition of small sub-counters that register minutes and hours. The Citizen Recordmaster ref. 63-0110, produced by the brand between 1967 and 1972, is an excellent vintage embodiment of this useful complication.

Housed in a 36mm polished stainless steel case with a signed crown; dual pump pushers; a wide, smooth bezel; and an acrylic crystal, it features a matte-black dial with an outer tachymeter scale in white printing; an inner 1/5th-seconds track; applied luminous indices; a luminous ‘sword’ handset; and a date window at 3 o’clock. Bisected in the center with a crosshair design in white, its dial doesn’t feature the totalizers of a typical chronograph — rather, its central sweep seconds records elapsed time and maintains a highly legible design.

Within a screw-down caseback inscribed with the watch’s reference and serial numbers, the hand-wound Citizen Calibre 5702 movement boasts 17 jewels and flyback capability. Beating at 18,000 vph, it is the only flyback-equipped, hand-wound chronograph movement in the vintage Citizen catalog. Paired to a multi-link bracelet with a signed flip-lock clasp and shipping with its inner box, this ref. 63-0110 is ready to continue its faithful time-recording duties on the wrist of a new and appreciative owner.
