With a history dating back over a century, Citizen has a large catalog of compelling vintage models worthy of your attention. This year, we’re teaming up with the vintage and pre-owned watch specialists at Analog:Shift in New York City to curate a capsule collection of pieces for the discerning collector.

A round, stainless steel case; a fully graduated dive bezel; a luminous black dial; a workhorse automatic movement. Such are the hallmarks of many a classic dive watch beloved by aficionados and casual horological dabblers alike.

The reference 51-2273, a Citizen diver that dates to roughly 1980, is among the best of the brand’s vintage automatic tool watches. Measuring 40mm in diameter, it features short, downward-sloping lugs; pointed crown guards; a screw-down crown; and a bidirectional, 60-click dive bezel with a black aluminum insert and thicker hash marks between minutes 0 and 15. Beneath an acrylic crystal is a matte-black dial with an outer minute track in white along the watch’s rehaut; applied round and rectangular indices filled with luminous material; a unique handset with a large, paddle-shaped hour hand, a ‘sword’ minute hand, and a square-tipped sweep seconds hand; and a day-date display at 3 o’clock in Kanji and English.

Powering the ref. 51-2273 is the Miyota Calibre 8200, an automatic, 21-jewel movement with a beat rate of 21,600 vph and a 45-hour power reserve. Flipping the watch over reveals a screw-down caseback inscribed with reference and serial numbers, while a close examination of the case itself reveals no evidence of overpolishing — indeed, this is a timepiece that has lived an honest life on the wrist of someone who clearly wore it frequently and cherished its utilitarian bona fides. For plumbing the ocean depths or climbing the tallest peaks, this handsome ref. 51-2273 is the perfect wrist companion — especially as it comes paired to a black rubber Tropic, the number-one name in dive watch straps.
