With a history dating back over a century, Citizen has a large catalog of compelling vintage models worthy of your attention. This year, we’re teaming up with the vintage and pre-owned watch specialists at Analog:Shift in New York City to curate a capsule collection of pieces for the discerning collector.
With its stainless steel C-shaped case, luminous black dial, rotating dive bezel and automatic Japanese movement, the Citizen reference 67-5776 dive watch is an excellent example of 20th-century tool watch manufacturing. Though it’s over 50 years old, its timeless design and hardy build quality give it the impression of having been produced yesterday.
Measuring 39.5mm in stainless steel, it features a brushed and polished case with short lugs; a screw-down crown protected by pointed crown guards; a screw-down caseback; and a rotating dive bezel with a black aluminum count-up insert with hash marks for the first 15 minutes. Beneath an acrylic crystal is a matte-black dial with an outer minute track in white; luminous rectangular hour indices; a luminous ‘Mercedes’ handset; and a date window at 3 o’clock. Paired to its case is a perforated yellow Tropic dive strap.
Powered by the automatic Citizen Calibre 5430 with 21 jewels and a beat rate of 18,000 vph, this remarkable dive watch appears in NOS (“New Old Stock”) condition, with nary a knick, knock, or scratch to its substantial steel case. (Flip the case over and you’re greeted with the watch’s reference and serial numbers on a surface that appears never to have sat upon a wrist!)
