As the SCUBA diving hobby proliferated in the post-War era, numerous leading watch companies entered the dive watch market. Citizen was no different: Adopting its 1950s-era Parawater technology for use in dedicated water-resistant timepieces, it began producing watches meant to plumb the ocean’s depths beginning in the 1960s. Today, Citizen is a global leader in dive watch design and production.
This vintage Citizen dive watch ref. 52-0110 dates to the 1970s, a time of radical horological change when dive watches were beginning to sprout fresh features and incredible depth ratings. Housed in a round 40mm stainless steel case with straight lugs; an unsigned screw-down crown; a bidirectional friction bezel with a black, fully-graduated dive insert; and a mineral crystal, it features a matte-black dial with an open outer minute track; large, luminous rectangular hour indices; a luminous ‘Mercedes’ handset; and a ‘roulette’ black and red date window at 3 o’clock.
Paired to a cool stainless steel folded H-link bracelet with a signed folding clasp, the ref. 52-0110 features a screw-down caseback denoting its reference and serial numbers. Powered by the automatic Miyota Calibre 8210A movement with 21 jewels and a beat rate of 21,600 vph, this no-fuss diver was produced in the spirit of the best mid-20th century tool watches. However, this is a particularly special find: Shipping with its guarantee, instructions, and inner box, it’s a time capsule both literal and figurative.
