The 1970s and ‘80s saw brands experimenting with new case shapes, cutting-edge materials, and unusual silhouettes. This tonneau-shaped watch with day-date complication is a prime example.
Housed in a 38 mm barrel-shaped titanium case with a polished bezel, an unsigned crown, and an acrylic crystal, it features a silvered dial with a parchment-like finish; an open minute track in black; applied, luminous baton indices; a day-date display at 3 o’clock with a bilingual date; and a luminous ‘sword’ handset with a yellow seconds hand. At the time of its production, titanium watches were still unusual and cutting edge, making this vintage Citizen a harbinger of innovations still largely in the future.
Paired to a titanium flat-link bracelet with a folding buckle and powered by the automatic Miyota Calibre 8200 movement with 21 jewels and a beat rate of 21,600 vph, this cool everyday watch — with its Brutalist overtones and unique materials — is perfect for someone who appreciates the intersection of horology and industrial design.
